About Chris Roy

Chris is the oldest of three children born and raised in Barre, Vermont. His mother was raised on a dairy farm in Derby, and his father grew up in a family of Barre granite workers. After graduating from Spaulding High School in 1982, Chris attended Harvard College. He was the first in his family to attend a four-year college. Chris graduated from Harvard in 1986 with an honors degree in Government. During the summer of 1985, Chris worked as the sole D.C. intern for U.S. Senator Robert Stafford.

After college, Chris attended Cornell Law School and graduated in 1989. After graduation, he returned to Vermont and worked for a year as a law clerk for Hon. Albert Coffrin of the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont. Then, in 1990, Chris joined the law firm of Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, with whom he has practiced over the last two decades.

Chris’ law practice focuses on all aspects of commercial and property-related litigation in both state and federal courts on behalf of individuals and businesses. Chris regularly represents clients before mediators, arbitrators and administrative agencies. He works on a broad spectrum of matters involving general business disputes, permitting, municipal matters, tax appeals, and property-related disputes. Chris represents regulated entities and professionals in adjudications before state administrative agencies and courts. Earlier in his career, he represented public school districts across the state.

Public service and volunteer work have always been an important part of Chris’ life. He previously served as a member of the Vermont Environmental Board and the Vermont Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, and is currently a member of the leadership team for the Vermont Lake Champlain Quadricentennial Commission. On the municipal side, Chris is currently a member of the Williston Selectboard, and served as a member of the Burlington Planning Commission in the early 1990s. He has also volunteered time to coach area youth sports teams over the years, including Burlington youth hockey, Williston youth baseball, and Chittenden South youth football. He is the Chair of the Champlain 400 Legacy Fund, and formerly served on the boards of Williston Elder Housing and the Family Connection Center of Vermont.

Over the years, Chris has been actively involved in efforts on behalf of the Vermont Republican Party and Republican candidates. He was Secretary of the State Republican Committee in the late 1990s, and played a leadership role in Sen. John McCain's Vermont presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2008. Chris was selected to represent Vermont Republicans at the 2000 and 2008 National Conventions. He has served as chairman of the Williston Town Republican Committee, and formerly served as vice-chair of the Burlington City Republican Committee.

Chris has lived in Williston for sixteen years and is married to Lisa Gendron Roy. Lisa is a native of Hardwick, Vermont and works as an accountant with the CPA firm of Bilodeau, Wells & Company in Essex Junction. Chris also has three sons ranging in age from thirteen to three. Chris enjoys spending time with his family, watching and playing a variety of team and individual sports, reading, history and genealogy.
